Non-Surgical Treatment for
Temporomandibular Disorders
We routinely provide TMJ treatment in a nonsurgical format. TMJ is a broad term that applies to temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Temporomandibular disorders are generally subdivided into three categories:
-
Myofascial pain is the most common form of TMD. The pain is typically located in the muscles that control jaw opening and closing. Often the pain can also involve muscles in the neck and shoulder as well.
-
Internal joint derangement usually involves either a dislocated jaw joint or displacement of the disk that cushions the joint.
-
Degenerative joint disease most often is attributed to arthritis.
A person with TMD symptoms could have one or multiple conditions. Initial therapy involves a thorough TMJ/ TMD exam to locate the origin of pain.
Often times splint therapy, or bite guard appliance, is utilized to protect the teeth and joint as well as relax the muscles.
Pharmacologic intervention is occasionally necessary in the acute presentation of TMD.
